When in Singapore, SG foodie and family enjoys making side trips to Little India in Serangoon, just opposite the Sim Lim Square area, to take in the sights of the colourful Hindu temples, little shops selling Indian goodies, the Indian vegetarian "fast food-like" restaurants, Mustafa - the only 24 hours shopping complex in Singapore and of course the essential fish-head curries from Gayathri or Muthu's. While there is Masjid India in KL and various other places like Brickfields and Klang that have Indian enclaves, SG foodie has always been looking for a proper, comfortable Indian restaurant that is not too costly and serves fish-head curry, (well okay honestly SG foodie was looking for a Muthu's-style restaurant in KL).
Well last weekend, SG foodie and the family found the very place but read on for SG foodie's opinions. Anyway the information came from an advertisement that DH spotted in an Air Asia magazine just recently but anyway it was a search for a new eating place so why not?! Ara Damansara is a relatively new area and SG foodie is still not very sure how to get there but thankfully DH is someone who has an inbuilt GPS and a nose for directions so we found our way to Oasis Square.
SG foodie really like the way Sime Darby has developed this estate. Oasis Square is basically large bungalow-like lots for each restaurant and the area is still quite new with many restaurants still being renovated and some lots still vacant. Rakuzen, one of SG foodie's favourite Japanese restaurant is here and there's a Chinese restaurant called Royal Flush (wonder if there's a gambling den a-la Hong Kong-movies), a Hooters-like restaurant (Bad Boys) and Secret Recipe is opening soon. Kumar's is situated right next to Royal Flush and directly opposite Rakuzen (separated by a horizontal pond-water feature).
So SG foodie and family got there for a late dinner and the restaurant's lower floor was relatively filled. Here each restaurant has a 2-storey building. So enough waffling about other stuff, the most important thing is the food!
We ordered a Fish Head Curry, some Cheese Naan and fried chicken. The fish head curry is superb (1st visit but was an epic fail in the 2nd visit - read update below) - rich, slightly tangy and certainly spicy enough to tantalise (only gripe is the lack of curry vegetables, only 2 ladies fingers in the curry). The Cheese Naan was a favourite with K1 and K2, served piping hot in a oh-so-fluffy-texture. The spices used on the fried chicken made it irresistibly delicious. While you wait for your food to be served, you get served some vegetables/fruits that are deep fried in spices - absolutely yummy and well you are eating fruits and vegetables hehehe!
SG foodie is just so glad to find something that remains her of home with the Fish Head curry served in such a comfortable environment. The restaurant also serves buffet style meals for buffet-lovers but seems not much variety. Drinks are over-priced though (soft drinks in glass loaded with ice is RM10+ per glass though bottled water is reasonable @RM3 per bottle).
UPDATE: SG foodie had an extremely disappointing 2nd visit at Kumar's. Asked for extra vegetables to be added to the fish head curry and got blank looks. The captain came and assured he'll request for extra ladies fingers - found 2 extra ladies fingers only. This time the fish head curry was tough and bony with very little flesh. Curry was good but the fish head itself was probably one of the worst SG foodie had tried. Cheese naan for K1 and K2 came with virtually no cheese this time. SG foodie also had to request for the side dish of fried vegetables instead this 2nd visit. Seems like some corners are being cut here. For a meal that costs RM150-200 you do expect some standard. Disappointing indeed.
