RECOMMENDED: Gonbei San Starhill Gallery KL

SG foodie brought DH and kiddos to Gonbei San at Starhill Gallery, KL, last weekend to celebrate a birthday. The last time SG foodie was at Gonbei was about 3 years back. Gonbei used to serve good quality Japanese food and that was what prompted the choice; especially when Jogoya, one of the most popular Japanese buffet restaurants in KL is also located in the same place, just diagonally opposite Gonbei. SG foodie tried Jogoya a year ago and wasn't quite impressed as the buffet wasn't quite worth the price. Apparently Gonbei serves buffet for weekend lunches but since SG foodie don't think much about the quality of food served at buffets, it was dinner ala-carte instead.

SG foodie decided that the menu should consist of assorted sashimi, assorted tempura, sukiyaki vegetables, grilled shishamo (pregnant fish) and a teppanyaki Australian tenderloin so as to have a little of everything. However SG foodie was disappointed with the assorted sashimi which was about 8-10 pieces of different raw fishes (yellowtail, salmon, tuna, prawns) and costs RM156... SG foodie has found the same quality of sashimi at more reasonable prices elsewhere in KL. The presentation was artistic but filled with ice instead of the essentials! The rest of the food were good but not particularly impressive, except for the Teppanyaki Australian Tenderloin (minimum order of 200g @RM56 per 100g). Ordered medium rare, the beef was tender and juicy seared in its own flavour with minimal salt, pepper and butter. Absolutely a must-try! The sukiyaki was good, not too sweet or salty although it was not served over a heated surface to keep it hot.

Deciding to give their dessert a try, SG foodie chose the mochi with peanut as featured on their menu. Frankly SG foodie has tasted better mochi than the one served at Gonbei San... it was sadly a disappointment. As you can tell, SG foodie wasn't particularly impressed with Gonbei San this time round but would recommend the Teppanyaki if that's what you are craving.
